Chip Hopkins Obituary-Death: Beloved Granite School District Teacher and Community Servant Dies Unexpectedly

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Chip Hopkins, a beloved former social science teacher and service facilitator with the Granite School District in Utah. A longtime resident of Holladay, Chip’s sudden death has left a profound void in the hearts of students, colleagues, and community members who were touched by his remarkable spirit and unwavering compassion.

For over 30 years, Chip dedicated his life to education, passionately teaching history and civics in a way that left lasting impressions far beyond the classroom. He was more than a teacher — he was a mentor, a listener, and a source of encouragement for every student he met. His classroom was a space of belonging, where each individual felt seen and heard.

Chip’s dedication extended beyond academics. He was known throughout the Salt Lake City area as a tireless volunteer, a man of quiet strength who constantly gave his time to lift others up. Whether organizing school service projects or lending support to families in crisis, Chip exemplified radical compassion, believing that every act of kindness—no matter how small—could change a life.

He held a Master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment from Walden University, a reflection of his lifelong commitment to educational excellence. Originally from Rowayton, Chip made Utah his home and became an integral part of the Granite School District and surrounding communities.

Tributes have poured in from former students and fellow educators. One heartfelt message read:

“Unbelievably sad and shocked to hear about the passing of Chip Hopkins. It is incredibly hard to wake up to this world knowing he isn’t physically here spreading more joy, more love, more radical compassion — especially now, when we need it (and him) the most.”

A viewing will be held on Sunday, July 13, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Stark Funeral Home (3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT). Immediately following, a Celebration of Life will take place at Canyon Rim Park (3100 Grace Street, Millcreek, UT), where family, friends, and community members are welcome to honor Chip’s life and legacy.

In this time of mourning, the legacy of Chip Hopkins lives on in the many lives he shaped — through his generosity, his dedication, and the powerful example he set of living with love and purpose.

Rest peacefully, Chip. Your memory will forever be a beacon of kindness.

  1. I’m so grateful for the positive impact Chip had on my life! I took his Community of Caring class and spent my time volunteering at an assisted living facility. I went on to minor in Gerontology in college and spent lots of time working with people with dementia. Chip was such a good example of serving with love and compassion. He is already missed.
